How the ABV calculator works

What the numbers mean

ABV is alcohol as a share of the drink — cocktails run 12–30% before dilution, landing near wine strength after ice. A standard drink (US) is 0.6 oz of pure alcohol; the calculator converts your pour into that unit, which is the one health guidance actually speaks.

Dilution changes everything

Stirring adds 15–20% water, shaking up to 25% — the glass arrives weaker than the recipe math. That is not a loss; it is the design: cocktails are served at their diluted strength, and the calculator shows both states so the pitcher and the shaker agree.

Session planning, honestly

  • 2–3 standard drinks across a 3-hour party is the standard planning figure per guest — the calculator multiplies by your servings field.
  • Food, water, and time move blood alcohol more than any recipe tweak — the hosting half of the math.
  • Low-ABV design is a feature: sherry, vermouth, and amaro builds halve the load while keeping the ritual. Half the spirit, fortified wine fills — the calculator prices the swap.
